Bonsai Diaries Week One – My Problem – 30/12/10
I’v got a five year old Elm Bonsai and its leaves turn yellow and fall. This is a big problem and I need that classification as soon as possible, one can identify the problem?

@zeroshadowsk8er Cheers for the reply buddy nice to hear a response! After a week or 2 of experimenting i realised my problem was how compressed the soil was. It was tightly compact which meant not much liquid could escape and began to rot the leaves. So i sorted that problem out and now the pot, plant and soil all are in great condition and alot my water escape when it has been watered! Cheers for your suggestions i will bare them in mind! Thanks!
also, I agree with yellowing leaves are a sign of too much water. be aware of the ability for your soil to drain well. high humidity will cause the soil to retain moisture more than low humidity.may I suggest keeping track of the weather, and yes- trees require less water during winter. Take care my friend!
very nice tree! ive started in bonsai recently ( 2 weeks in)and i may start a video journal as well!! keep it up my friend. I am a subscriber!
Where are you keeping it? It needs to be right next to a window and ideally outside. Excess water does NOT generally cause a problem with Chinese elm. email me or post a message on weetrees co uk
@harico100 Thanks for the response Harico, Ill take all this into consideration. I’m going to give it a few month to settle in as i’v just re-planted the tree. But i’ll add some sand/gravel and i’v mvoed the plant toward my window sill so it gets more light. I think its had a bad start due to me filling it up with water when i re-planted it.
Thanks for the suggestions, TehYoungOne15.
Hi,usually leaves turning yellow is the sign of to much water.syptoms could be watering to much.water less in winter and c how it goes, but dont let it dry out.also bad drainage could be the problem, wet roots.bonsai soil from garden centers etc have to much soil in them.try add horticultural gravel/sand for better drainage.also try keep the tree in good light condition i.e.window sill/conservatory,but not in direct sunlight.
