I would actually disagree. You’d have to trim it correctly to keep it small, and there are probably some trees that it just wouldn’t work, but I think it would work on a lot of trees that most people wouldn’t suspect.

Bonsai IS a normal tree! Bonsai is only the word for the method to make it small.
As a beginner, you should do EXTENSIVE research. This is a lifelong commitment. An oak tree can live 200 years.
There are indoor trees, and outdoor trees. Start learning, then decide.
It is certainly possible to make a bonsai out of almost any woody plant although some are obviously better than others. What you need to do is go to a local garden center and find a plant in a pot about 1 gal size. Plants such as cotoneaster and juniper would probably be your best bet. I recommend going through a bunch of plants to find one that looks the best to you. Once the plant has been selected take it out of its pot and gently remove the dirt from the roots and trim them so they fit nicely into your pot. then trim off any unwanted branches and presto your on your way to a nice bonsai. check out this video for help
